There are many applications one might want to use on an Open BSD system.
To make this software easier to install and manage, it is ported to Open BSD and packaged.
Application X is said to be dependent on these other applications, which is why Y and Z are called dependencies of X. This will, among other things, prevent the dependencies of a package from being deleted before the package itself has been deleted.
The ports collection does not go through the same thorough security audit that is performed on the Open BSD base system.
Although we strive to keep the quality of the packages high, we just do not have enough resources to ensure the same level of robustness and security.
First let’s install pkgng, (should we be calling it simply ‘pkg’?
), it is in the Free BSD ports tree and you can find it under ‘ports-mgmt/pkg‘.
